Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Ethnic Rhinoplasty is one of the most interesting types of rhinoplasty we perform. It requires a significant knowledge of the anatomical differences between African American nose structure vs Caucasian nose structure. This also involves Middle Eastern and South Asian noses as well, as there are significant anatomical differences between them.
The African American nose requires tremendous attention to the detail of the nasal bridge as it is often weaker and these patients can have much wider nasal bones. Wide nasal bones and a deprojected nasal bridge can be difficult to fix. We have been able to successfully care for our patients with this type of anatomy with scarless nose surgery where we can narrow the bones and elevate the bridge to give a more natural appearance.
Also with African American Noses, the tip of the nose is different because of the anatomy of the lower lateral cartilages. Because they have a larger broader base and a weaker medial crus of the lower lateral cartilages, there is often a flaring of the nasal base and weakness of the nasal tip. This can be improved with scarless internal sculpting and graft positioning to help increase tip support.
