Acne Blue Light Beverly Hills

What is acne?

Just beneath the surface of the skin lie hundreds of tiny glands called sebaceous glands. Their function is to collect and excrete the oily substance called sebum, to keep the skin healthy. The tiny pathway for the sebum to escape can get clogged, and bacterium called p. acne grows inside. In a short time, the area swells up and forms acne on your skin.

What’s the blue light treatment?

There is now a treatment available that doesn’t depend on medication. The Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy is a special light that can kill the acne bacteria in your skin. After some weeks, the blue light can control your acne and/or clear it up for a long period of time.

How does it work?

The blue light photosensitizes and kills bacteria. This in turn prevents the obstruction of the sebaceous follicle and therefore acne growth is inhibited.

How frequently do I need treatments?

Once a month for 5 treatments, you sit with your face close to the light for approximately 16 minute sessions.

Does the treatment hurt?

No. You may experience sensations of warmth, tingling or prickling in the areas with the lesions. These feelings of discomfort are mild if any and should improve at the end of the light treatment. If the acne is moderate, severe, or cystic just blue light treatment alone is not effective. We have to use a special medication (ALA) to make the acne more responsive to the treatment.

What is ALA?

Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is naturally present in our body. When applied on the skin (from the tube) it’s selectively absorbed into

  • sebaceous glands
  • actinic keratoses spots and photo damaged cells.
  • ALA is then converted to a photosensitizer- protoporphyrin (PPIX) Blue light activates PPIX and produces the singlet oxygen which destroys the target cell.

ALA + Blue Light combination can cause temporary:

  1. Redness (appears like a mild to moderate sunburn, could last up to 3-5 days)
  2. Swelling (mild, could last 1-2 days)
  3. Peeling (moderate and usually occurs on day 3 or 4, should disappear in a few days)

What is the cost?

Blue light alone: $200 per session

Blue light + ALA: $500 per session
